Legal Counsel

What you'll do...

The Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advice on a broad range of business, employment, regulatory, litigation and patient matters. The Legal Counsel will work under the supervision of the Assistant General Counsel. Requires in-office work at the Great Expressions Practice Support Center in Southfield, MI a minimum of four days per week.

  • Ability to work independently on routine matters in a fast-paced environment, but seeks guidance and supervision on more complicated matters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong drafting skills suitable to complex and sophisticated matters.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential information with discretion and in a manner that is efficient and productive to management decision-making.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects with correct prioritization and time management skills.
  • Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office, WestLaw Practical Law, and Lexis.


Duties and Responsibilities...
  • Advise Human Resources regarding a wide variety of employment law matters including those pertaining to recruiting, hiring, employee relations, discipline and terminations, investigations, leaves of absence, workplace discrimination and harassment, compensation, and benefits.
  • Draft and maintain employment-related documents, agreements, and policies.
  • Work with outside counsel to respond to subpoenas and other third-party requests for personnel files or employment-related documents and to dental association, dental board and attorney general complaints, and actively manage outside counsel as they assist GEDC in employment and workers' compensation matters, malpractice and regulatory hearings, trials, arbitrations, mediations, and depositions.
  • Provide legal counsel to various GEDC business group leaders on relevant healthcare laws and regulations impacting the dental industry.
  • Oversee, investigate, and provide guidance on issues related to the patient quality of care lifecycle including claim review, insurance reporting, adverse events and internal patient grievances.
  • Draft and advise on communications with regulatory agencies (e.g., requests for additional information, allegations of violations, inspection report responses, disciplinary matters).
  • Provide assistance to GEDC's Patient Services team, which resolves patient grievances, investigates insurance audits and inquiries, and provides patient records in response to subpoenas, third-party or individual requests.
  • Draft, review and negotiate contracts across all functional areas, including commercial agreements, vendor agreements, confidentiality agreements, business associate agreements, supply agreements, payor contracts, commercial leases and other contracts that arise from time to time.
  • Advise teams on compliance with the terms of active contracts, with the ability to interpret and discuss complex legal concepts in a pragmatic way that results in actionable business advice.
  • Research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutes, case law, and industry trends applicable to medical professional liability.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


What we require you have...
  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school, with licensure to practice and member of good standing of a state bar.
  • Minimum of three (3) years at a law firm or in-house position with preventive counseling and litigation experience. Prior in-house experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with handling matters in litigation and the administrative agency process.
  • Proven experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of commercial contracts.
  • Knowledge of public policies, legislation, guidelines, and standards related to fraud, waste and abuse, HIPAA and other matters pertaining to the health care industry.
